Results, Review, Recap of 2014 WWE Hell in a Cell

If I've said it once I will say it a million times...WWE knows how to ruin a good show. Tonight was the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view and before I start my rant here are the results:

-Mark Henry def. Bo Dallas (Kickoff Match)

I never thought I would say this but John Cena and Randy Orton was the best match overall of the night. Ambrose and Rollins had a great match but the ending ruined it. Bray Wyatt's presence was not needed in the Main Event. Rollins should have won with help from The Authority and not anyone else. I am very disappointed that the show ended the way it did. I was expecting some epic spot between Rollins and Ambrose to end the match. They did their best to try and recreate a PG version of what Mick Foley did but the ending did not fulfill how the match was going which put a sour taste on the match and the show as a whole.

I really didn't find anything good with show. I really thought WWE made Cesaro look extremely bad by letting him lose two straight falls in his Intercontinental Title Match with Dolph Ziggler. This is why the WWE World Title show be showcased all the time because one of these guys should be the WWE World Champion and the other Intercontinental Champion. Cesaro has paid his dues, been a company guy, and has never gotten injured. What a great way to reward a guy who has a unique style, has marketability with his background and is naturally gifted.

Did anyone watch the Monday Night War episode where they talked about Goldberg in WCW? The comment was made that Goldberg's only gimmick was the streak and once the streak died so did Goldberg's momentum and career. Well WWE is repeating history with Rusev because explain to me how Rusev is going to be successful once he loses. He should have lost to Jack Swagger, dropped the Russian gimmick and moved on to something else. I am personally getting bored with Rusev just like I am getting bored with the Divas and Tag Team division. It's all the same thing week after week. Start incorporating talent from NXT, start bringing back legends that can still go and stop letting part timers hold titles.

WWE really needs to get back Roman Reigns, Bad News Barrett and Daniel Bryan back. These three filled some big voids and their presence is missed. I am not even going to rate this show because I am just so disgusted with how the product is. The next pay-per-view is WWE Survivor Series and I hope John Cena faces Brock Lesnar and then Seth Rollins cashes in the briefcase to win the title. The WWE ship needs to redirected and they need to do it before Wrestlemania season starts otherwise no one is going to care about Wrestlemania 31. Until Survivor Series hopefully the next four weeks of TV are decent.

The Corner of Controversy and Criticism- 10/26/2014

One thing I love when it comes to writing about sports and pro wrestling is there is always some sort of debate and argument going on. This week I debated about Bobby Lashley being a better MMA fighter then Brock Lesnar. The points that were made to me were that Brock fought in UFC and fought more credible opponents. If you take a look at Lashley he wrestles in TNA and fights in Bellator every chance he gets. I don't discredit what Brock Lesnar did in UFC but watching Lashley makes me wonder if he could top what Lesnar did. Lashley has great speed, is more well rounded and goes into fights with a better game plan. I always felt that Lesnar didn't go into his fights with a great game plan. It was bull-rush your opponent hope you knock him out right a way. Maybe Lashley hasn't fought the stars like Lesnar has but Lashley is proving to be a credible MMA Fighter. 

Speaking of credibility, I am really curious to see which NBA teams are going to be a credible playoff contender when the season starts this Tuesday. The biggest question on everyone's mind is can LeBron James lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to an NBA Championship? I think they have a great shot at it. I am going to make a bold prediction and say the Eastern Conference Finals will be the Cleveland Cavaliers versus the Chicago Bulls. I believe in the Western Conference that it will come down to the San Antonio Spurs and the Los Angeles Clippers. Both teams have a lot of depth and talent on their roster. I think it's going to be an interesting year in the NBA with their not being a big 3 or a team stacked full of All Stars. Let the NBA season begin.

Dale Earnhardt Jr went back to Victory Lane again at Martinsville Speedway and missing the Chase for the Cup last week didn't stop from him celebrating. Junior has four wins this season and it's the best overall season he has had in a long time. I am not sure that I like the Sprint Cup Championship coming down to one race. I think it should go back to the original way it was when you had to fight all 36 races to win the championship. Keep the points system the same as it is right now but don't reset the points with 10 races left. As it is right the most points a driver can win a race is 48. If a drivers wins the race and leads the most laps they would receive 3 bonus points for winning, one bonus point for leading a lap and one more bonus point for leading the most laps. This points system keeps close and competitive and it should stay that way all season long. I personally think they made this format to keep Jimmie Johnson from winning anymore championships. The sport does need excitement and different winners but at what point do you take credibility away from drivers who perform well consistently throughout all 36 races. Not everyone is going to like every format but hopefully NASCAR gives credibility back to the drivers who finish well consistently all year around.

When it comes to playoff formats I do not like the way College Football is going right now. If the season ended today the four playoff teams would all be from the S.E.C. How does that benefit all the other conferences in College Football? There are 10 conferences in Division 1 College Football so take the winner of each conference and put them in the playoffs. The top 6 team get a round one bye and the bottom four teams play to advance against to the next round. It would keep interest throughout all of College Football and give each conference something to fight for. Each conference should be represented to make it fair and eliminate any controversy of who should be there and who shouldn't. Call me crazy but I believe that's the logical way to handle the College Football Playoffs. 

Another week in sports has come and gone. By this time next week we will have a World Series winner, another NFL week gone by and a kick off to the NBA season. Be safe, be strong and believe in yourself. Controversy Doesn't Come Without Criticism!

The Corner of Controversy and Criticism- 10/19/2014

One thing I've learned from watching sports throughout my life is that if an athlete is backed into a corner and has to win at all costs they usually rise to the occasion. Today was not any different when Brad Keselowski won the Geico 500 at Talladega. Keselowski, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. all needed a win to advance into the next round of Championship Playoffs in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Kyle Busch and Kasey Kahne were also eliminated from contention along with Junior and Johnson. This NASCAR season has been more competitive, and has seen more emotion then ever before. Basically you win or you go home. I do think the new format makes for good racing and good TV and now that its here it will take a lot to change the format. With three races left until the championship finale you can bet that the eight drivers remaining are going to race their hearts out and do everything they can to win.

On the opposite side of not trying to win is Percy Harvin. The Seattle Seahawks traded Harvin earlier this week after reports that he has been involved in fights with Golden Tate, Doug Baldwin and Russell Wilson. The straw that broke the camels back is when Harvin refused to play in the last drive of the game last week against the Cowboys. He was traded to the Jets for a 2015 draft pick that could range from a 2nd round to a 4th round pick. I really believe that the NFL needs to change the rules that would allow teams to cut players who are being disruptive to their team without having to eat the contract. If the Seahawks would have released him they still would have had to pay him his 25 million over the next couple of years. I believe that's a horrible rule to have. If you're conduct is being detrimental to a team you should not be getting a paycheck, especially if you bench yourself when the game is on the line. Athletes are spoiled and are pampered. By not laying down the law on behavior like this makes things worse. In my opinion, Percy Harvin does not deserve 25 million dollars and honestly doesn't even deserve an NFL contract right now. 

Speaking of bad behavior, it was reported that former MMA fighter War Machine attempted to commit suicide in jail over the week. Now I don't wish bad things on anyone and I don't condone someone trying to kill themselves but I honestly have no sympathy for this guy. If you saw the pictures of what he did to his girlfriend you would be disgusted. I think it's pretty disgusting that a guy who is trained in fighting sinks low enough to beat up a female who probably had no chance of defending herself unless she stabbed or shot him. It's another case of an athlete thinking they can get away with whatever they want and then when they do get punished they do something for attention. There is nothing good about this story accept that he got put in jail which was the appropriate punishment for his crime.

The bright spot of the week is that the World Series is set. It will be the Kansas City Royals versus the San Francisco Giants. ESPN labeled this the worse World Series possibility that could have happened. I think it's great because more then one region has interest in the series. If the World Series would have been Dodgers-Angels, Royals-Cardinals or Orioles-Nationals I think the ratings would have been bad because only one region of the country would have cared. The Royals are the feelgood story in sports right now. It's taken them a long time to build the team they have and now they are making the most of it. Kansas City is playing like they will never be in this position again. I think having that mentality makes them very dangerous and very determined to win. I am looking forward to seeing how this series turns out and which players are going to create a legacy for them.

This week was a crazy week in sports and I am sure with the World Series starting and the NASCAR playoffs getting more intense there will be more to discuss at this time next week. With that being said be safe, be strong and believe in yourself. Controversy Doesn't Come Without Criticism. 

UFC and WWE Should Share Brock Lesnar

If you're a true WWE fan then right now you're probably upset that Brock Lesnar is WWE World Heavyweight Champion. He only appears part time and there are rumors he won't reappear until January. That would make it four months without a  WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Lesnar's WWE schedule is a lot like his UFC schedule was  Most top UFC fighters only twice, maybe three times a year which is a perfect chance for Lesnar to do both. The only way Lesnar would be able to do both is if Dana White and Vince McMahon agreed to share him. Dana White and Vince McMahon are friends and have respect for each other but they do not want to be involved with each others business. I believe both men should put their egos aside and agree to share the contractual rights to Brock Lesnar. There are reasons that would benefit both sides. 

In the UFC the days of Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture, Tito Ortiz and many others are over. There are no more big named fighters with personality that you can market with. The fighters from 5-10 years ago made the sport standout and made you want to watch what was going to happen. When Brock Lesnar was in the UFC he was the most hated man in the company and people paid to see how he would do against one of their heroes. UFC really never had a hero before and really hasn't had one since. Brock Lesnar. The numbers speak for themselves with how much of a draw Lesnar was for the UFC. Four of Lesnars fight came into the top 10 of most pay-per-view buys in UFC history:

-1) UFC 100: Lesnar vs. Mir - 1,600,000 buys
-2) UFC 116: Lesnar vs Carwin - 1,116,000 buys
-5) (tied) UFC 121: Lesnar vs Velasquez - 1,050,000 buys
-7) UFC 91: Couture vs Lesnar - 1,010,000 buys

So as you can see bringing back Lesnar would benefit the UFC in a big way. Love him or hate him he draws people in to watch. Those numbers would benefit the WWE as well. The common theory is that UFC fans absolutely hate pro wrestling but how do we know that? Has their ever been a poll? If UFC fans absolutely hated WWE then why was Lesnar such a draw? I think UFC fans will always be curious to see how a professional wrestler does in their sport but would they ever be curious to see how one of their own does in pro wrestling. Guys like Chael Sonnen, Rampage Jackson and Tito Ortiz have always talked about being involved or have already been involved. Ken Shamrock and Dan Severn both found success in pro wrestling and in MMA but right now no one can match Lesnars accomplishments in doing both.

WWE is not in competition with UFC and vice-versa. One is sports entertainment and the other is a contact sport. WWE is pre-determined and UFC is not. I think TNA and Bellator have the right idea with Bobby Lashley. I am personally not a big fan of Bellator but I watch to see how Lashley does. Do you see how that mentality would benefit both companies. I was always a UFC fan back in the days of Royce Gracie and before there were rules. I will however admit I paid closer attention to the UFC when Lesnar was there. I was so into the UFC and MMA I took up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for about a year and loved every minute of it.

It is apparent Brock Lesnar is a big name and a big draw in both WWE and UFC. With how bad the ratings are in WWE these days cross promoting with UFC might not be a bad idea. It goes back to Brock Lesnar being WWE World Heavyweight Champion and not defending the title for four months. I think fans would have a different view if Lesnar was doing stuff for UFC during his off time in WWE. However Lesnar is sitting at home doing nothing which leaves WWE without the biggest prize in the industry not being the focus of why everyone is there.  This is why Dana White and Vince McMahon need to come to some sort of an agreement to allow Lesnar to do both and become the first person to actively be involved with the UFC and WWE. Wouldn't it be something if Brock Lesnar was WWE World Heavyweight Champion and UFC Heavyweight Champion at the same time? There is something to think about. 

The Corner of Controversy and Criticism- 10/12/14

Everyone that knows me knows that I am very hard on athletes when they break the law and I have no mercy or compassion for them due to the fact that they make more in one year than I will in my lifetime. Adrian Peterson admitted to smoking weed before his first court appearance this week. Prosecutors want him arrested but no action has been taken. I personally think Peterson has buried himself personally and professionally. For someone who is suppose to be a role model and does a lot for kids he should come out and say that this is not the way you should act. With his admission of smoking weed one has to wonder if he was under the influence of something when he disciplined his kid because any normal human being knows you shouldn't beat a toddler until he bleeds. There is a lot of heat on Adrian Peterson which is not going to go away anytime soon. This situation is going to follow him for a long time to come.

Speaking of out of character actions I was really surprised to see Matt Kenseth go after Brad Keselowski during the conclusion of the NASCAR race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. There is a lot more on the line with the championships rounds and emotions are also high as well. Keselowski had issues with Kenseth, Hamlin and Stewart on Saturday Night. Denny Hamlin wanted a piece of him first but his crew held him back. Keselowski is a hot head and I've lost a lot of respect for him over the last year with some of the things he's done and said. Maybe Carl Edwards should teach him some respect again.

With one race left until elimination Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jimmie Johnson need to win or have everyone else in-front of them due horrible at Talladega. Dale Jr. is having one of the better seasons he has had in career and Jimmie wants to tie Petty and Earnhardt Sr for 7 championships. I personally think they created this format to prevent Jimmie from winning anymore championships. It's no secret that ratings tanked in the 5 year span that he was champion. I have a feeling that Talladega is going to shake everything up and more tempers going to flare by the end of next Sunday's race.

In terms of playing like your life depends on it, how about the Kansas City Royals. They have taken the first two games of the American League Championship Series. They are playing like they will never be in the playoffs again and that's what has made them so dangerous in the postseason. The have lowest payroll in the playoffs and it is proving that money doesn't win always championships. The Royals are playing with heart, determination and they should be inspiring every baseball team out there who could learn something from the,. They have developed a great farm system, picked up a few key pieces and have taken risks in games that you don't see a lot of teams take. If your baseball is not in the playoffs then get behind the Kansas City Royals. They are a team worth rooting for this postseason.

Lastly, it was weird and great to see LeBron James back in a Cleveland Cavaliers jersey. They played the Heat in Brazil. It was a pretty competitive game that went into overtime. Obviously King James didn't play a lot because obviously it was a preseason but could the Cavs beating the Heat be a sign of things to come this NBA season? I think Cleveland has a great shot to win a championship over the next couple of years but it's going to take a healthy LeBron, Love and Irving to do it. It's good to see LeBron back in Cleveland but he better perform well with how well Brian Hoyer and the Browns are playing. It's a good time to be a Cleveland sports fan right now. Who would have ever thought that someone would be saying that?

The gave a list of contenders and then decided a winner. It featured athletes all throughout history in MLB, NASCAR, NBA, NFL and NHL. The Corner of Controversy and Criticism- 10/5/2014

This week is the 10 year anniversary of Hollywood's World of Sports and it's been suggested to me over the years that I write a weekly column and not so much wait until a big news story breaks out. I've decided to call this weekly column "The Corner of Controversy and Criticism," which is based off the Hollywood's World of Sports motto "Controversy Doesn't Come Without Criticism." Each week I will take four or five stories in sports and give my uncut, uncensored and unfiltered opinions on the topic. I will be continuing to write about major stories and issues going on the world of sports but this column will insure that I have something to talk and write about once a week. So here we go for this debut post.

As a resident in Michigan this could have been one of the worst day in sports history. The Tigers lose to Baltimore to be swept out of the playoffs. They have a horrible bullpen and a very inexperienced coach who probably should have went to coaching baseball 101. The Tigers are too talented to not be in the World Series and they should have won the AL Central by atleast 10 games if not more. My hats off to the Kansas City Royals who are having great post-season games thus far. The Lions are another talented team who are losing games very foolishly. I would be looking really hard into pulling Jason Hanson out of retirement or signing former Broncos kicker Matt Prater once his suspension is over. I have a feeling some changes in the Motor City are coming and it won't be pretty.

Last week I was a very angry Carolina Panthers fan. Yes you read it right, I am a diehard Carolina Panthers fan. I truly believe they should have never released Steve Smith for as much as he done for the Panthers. I was so happy that he performed well last week but at the same time so angry that the Panthers lost due to his performance against them. This week the Panthers continued their struggles in the first half against the Chicago Bears but somehow in the 2nd half came back to win the game. 

Today started the 2nd round of the NASCAR Chase for the Cup and both Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr wrecked in the race and now have fight to make sure they make the next round. I personally could care less if Jimmie Johnson made it to the next round. I think NASCAR made this new format so Jimmie couldn't win anymore championships. Call me crazy but most NASCAR loyal fans don't think he deserves to be compared to Petty and Earnhardt. Those two legends had to earn their championships the hard way for entire year. I personally think it should go back to the way it use to be where everyone stays in contention for the whole year and not resetting the points for the final ten races. Maybe NASCAR will change back someday but until then we are stuck.

The NHL and NBA preseasons are now going and before you know it we will be in the middle of winter with hockey and basketball. I will be curious to see how the Cleveland Cavaliers do this year. To be honest I think LeBron James purposely left Cleveland so they could get high draft picks and a better young nucleus for LeBron to play with. Yes I am conspiracy theorist from time to time but it makes sense. Cleveland has a team that can finally bring a championship to the city. I will be curious to see who in the Eastern Conference that can compete with them,

Speaking of Cleveland, congratulations to the Cleveland Browns who came back from a 25 point deficit to beat the Titans. Some crazy things are going on with this Browns team this year. The Browns are 2-2 and that's a shock to me because the two loses were by 3 points or less. Who cares about Johnny Manziel when you have Brian Hoyer. The Browns have a good young core of players who I have a feeling will make them more competitive in the future.

It's been a crazy weekend in sports but this is just the beginning of the brutal and blunt opinions I am going to share on a weekly basis. Until next Sunday be safe, be strong, and be your best!

A Winter Full of Sports in Grand Rapids

If you live in Grand Rapids Michigan in the winters usually the only sport to attend in the winter time is by going to Van Andel Arena to watch the Red Wings minor league hockey affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins. On November 26th the DeltaPlex will be the other facility that sports fans can flock to so they can enjoy a sport event. It was announced awhile back that Grand Rapids would be getting a NBA D-League affiliate team and they will be known as the Grand Rapids Drive. We have had the Hoops, the Flight and the Cyclones but none have ever been linked to the Detroit Pistons. 

I believe this will make a huge impact in Grand Rapids due to the fact that the Griffins belong to the Red Wings and the Whitecaps belong to the Tigers. Over the years both minor league teams have produced talent that have went on to play in the NHL and MLB. This is a chance for Grand Rapids fans to see what to be vocal about who could be the future of the Pistons much like Grand Rapids have been vocal about talent that have played for the Whitecaps and Griffins over the years.

Like the Griffins and Whitecaps, the Drive will have affordable ticket prices ranging from 10 dollars to 30 dollars. They will also have theme nights and promotions that will be announced at a later dates. There will be plenty of chances to see the new Grand Rapids Drive Basketball Team during the 23 home games they will have in their inaugural season. There is no doubt in my mind on the handful of nights the Drive and Griffins both play at home that downtown Grand Rapids will be hopping and full of energy. The local sports bars and restaurants will benefit big time on the nights both teams play at home. Having two sports teams playing in the winter time will be great for the economy of Grand Rapids and the businesses around both the DeltaPlex and Van Andel Arena. Regardless if you're a hockey fan or basketball fan it's going to be a great year to be a sports fan in Grand Rapids Michigan.

Is the FCC Being Unfair to the Washington Redskins?

Over the last couple of years there has been a lot of controversy regarding the name of the Washington Redskins. The FCC has been targeting the Washington football team by taking away their trademark rights and now trying to ban broadcasters from using the name while referring to them. I take issue with the FCC's actions on a couple of levels. The first thing is that there are three other professional sports teams with a Native American nature to them. Why isn't the FCC targeting them? We have the Cleveland Indians, Chicago Blackhawks and the Atlanta Braves. No one is taking issue with the other three. Multiple polls done over the years show that Native Americans have no issues with the Washington Redskins name or any other team that has a Native American name to it.  Now there have been several Native American group who have taken issue with the name decided to take it to the federal courts but did not win due to lack of evidence of disparagement. 

The other issue I have with this controversy is that the Washington Redskins were formed in 1932. If there was an issue with the name why wasn't it addressed many years ago. Why didn't anyone ask the previous owners to change the name? I understand that the name sounds derogatory and sounds hurtful but I don't think that was ever the intention when the name and mascot were founded. There are so many factors to this controversy that if you take sides no matter what side it is there will be some sort out of outrage. If it were my decision I would come to some sort of agreement that if Washington uses the Redskin name that they should donate a portion of their merchandise and ticket sales to different tribes around the country. Use it to help with scholarships, employment, and to those are struggling in the economy. 

I do believe that the FCC is going overboard with trying to change the name of something that's been around for 80 years. I could understand if they were formed like 5-10 years ago but the Washington Redskin name is synonymous with the NFL and they have a fan base that has been very loyal over the years. On one final note I don't think the founders of the Washington football team were trying to be racists and I don't think the current owners are racists. I think they are trying to protect the tradition of their football team. On a personal note just because I agree with the Washington Redskin name it does not mean I am racist or prejudiced against anyone. I just wanted to clarify that before readers make any assumptions. Hopefully the Redskin controversy will be resolved quicker rather then later because quite frankly the NFL has bigger problems then a team name.
