Can Women Be Dominant in the UFC?

This past Saturday night on the Ultimate Fighter I watched a lot of great MMA action but the one fight  that stood out to me was Cat Zingano versus Miesha Tate. I honestly have not got into a match in quite a long time. I am not making this statement because it was two women. This statement is being made because I saw two competitors go at it until the match ended. I saw aggression and it was the type of an aggression I haven't see in a long time by two MMA fighters. Cat Zingano won the match the way she won was absolutely vicious. I have seen quite a few female fights in Strikeforce and UFC and they all have been excellent.

The one thing I'd like to see is see is Dana White convince and sign Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos and Gina Carino to the UFC. When I think of women in MMA these are the two I think of the most. Currently,  Ronda Rousey is the UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion and previously held the same title in Strike Force.  Rousey is 7-0 and all of her fights have ended submission via armbar. Currently there are twelve women contracted in the UFC and they include Alexis Davis, Liz Carmouche, Germaine de Randamie, Shelia Gaff, Sarah Kaufman, Julie Kedzie, Sara McMann, Amanda Nunes, Rosie Sexton, Cat Zingano, Miesha Tate, and Rousey. These twelve women have a chance to create and write their own legacy.

It is a good time to be a woman in the UFC because they do not have the star power like they use to. There is no Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, Randy Couture, Dan Severn or Ken Shamrock. All these fighters had larger then life personalities that people could get behind. I mean no disrespect to the current roster of the UFC because they are all very talented but their is no bad boy, no rebel, and no man who is suppose to be past his prime that can still continue to kick ass.

The women of the UFC have an opportunity to create their own star power, their own legacy and their destiny. The women of UFC will make even more history because on the next Ultimate Fighter, the coaches will be Cat Zingano and Ronda Rousey. The show will feature an all women house. This also means Zingano will get a title shot at Rouseys title sometime in 2013.

Woman have can be successful in any sport. Take a look a pro wrestling, NASCAR, basketball, and bowling. They all have women who are successful. I applaud Dana White for his decision to bring women into the UFC. He will attract a new audience and new demographics. So when you ask, can women be dominant in the UFC? I say yes. The can be dominant and they can steal the show just like Zingano versus Tate did.

Memo to College Coaches: Be Honest About Going Pro

On  January 16, 2013 Chip Kelly accepted an offer to become the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. In weeks leading up to this he kept on saying that he would remain as the head coach for the Oregon Ducks. It's three months later and I have finally come up with the words on how I feel about this subject.

Coaches who are thinking about going pro just need to be honest. They say they don't want to be a distraction so they deny it by saying they are staying with their respective university. They might not be a distraction but their decisions cause a lot of problems. Think about it from this point of view. Let's say that you are an athlete being recruited by Oregon University and one of the reasons you want to play there is because of the coach. The athlete meets with coach and likes what he sees and hears. The coach decides to leave for another position and now the recruit doesn't want to play for Oregon  I don't these coaches realize how much damage they really do to these universities. It really hurts the recruitment process and more importantly it costs the school money to start up new negotiations with a new coach. That is money that the university could have used towards something more important.

I respect what Chip Kelly did for Oregon University but don't sit there and say one thing and do another. If a college coach is thinking about going pro the come out and say it. Be honest with the staff, the players and possible recruits. Chip Kelly was the coach of Oregon for four years. In that time he accomplished a lot including two trips to the Fiesta Bowl, a trip to the Rose Bowl and played for a National Championship. It's hard to fill those shoes. Chip Kelly is not the only one who has bolted to the NFL after denying that he was doing so.

I wish Chip Kelly all the best in his role as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles but just because they are successful in college doesn't mean they will be in the pros. Will he be added the list of names like Saban, Spurrier, Carroll, and others or will he prove to be an exception? Only time will tell.

Sports Movie Review: 42

All my life I have been a baseball fan and have always been passionate about the game. As I have gotten older I've learned to appreciate the history of America's past time. In today's generation you have many different ethnicity's and all of them can be attributed to Jackie Robinson breaking the barriers.

All I ever knew of who Jackie Robinson was, is that he was the first ever  African American baseball player that made it. In the movie 42, it shows all of the aspects of Jackie Robinson. It shows the husband, the father and the hero that many have heard about for decades.

The movie highlights Jackie Robinsons stints as a member of the Kansas City Monarchs and Montreal Royals. The movie primarily focuses on Robinson's 1947 rookie year with the Brooklyn Dodgers. The movie documents the trials and tribulations that Robinson went through. He was resented by teammates, abused by opposing teams and threatened by locals wherever he stayed.

Throughout the movie it shows how Jackie Robinsons teammates started to defend and accept him into the Brooklyn Dodgers organization. I also love that they highlighted Wendell Smith's journey with Jackie and how his work brought this great story to life. Wendell Smith was the first ever African-American writer to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

My favorite scene in the movie was when Jackie Robinson was in the trainers room and he asked Branch Rickey why he was doing what he was doing. This scene to me was so powerful and inspiring. Branch Rickey's explanation was the one strong message I took away from this movie. I also love Rickey uses the Bible to prove his point about why Robinson should be accepted.

If you are a sports fan, more importantly a baseball fan this is a movie you should watch. I think the late great pair of Siskel and Ebert would have given this movie two thumbs up. I never really appreciated the fact that all the MLB players wear the number 42 until I saw this movie. This a great movie and a great tribute to a legend and an hero.

Jackie Robinson is a true American Legend. The movie 42 made sure his legacy will never be forgotten.

NFL Off-Season Moves as of 4/15/2013

It has been two weeks since the last NFL Off-Season updates and there has been significant moves made but the wheeling and dealing has calmed down since the NFL Draft is coming up. Here is a recap of the last two weeks.

-Tennessee Titans agreed to terms with WR Kevin Walter on a one-year contract.
-Seattle Seahawks traded QB Matt Flynn to Oakland for a 2014 fifth-round draft pick and a conditional 2015 draft pick. Also signed QB Brady Quinn.

-Indianapolis Colts agreed to terms with WR Darrius Heyward-Bey.

-Cleveland Browns traded QB Colt McCoy and an undisclosed 2013 draft pick to San Francisco for two undisclosed 2013 draft picks.

-Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed PK Nate Kaeding, DL George Selvie, DL Derek Landri, RB Brian Leonard and WR Steve Smith.

-Oakland Raiders traded QB Carson Palmer and a 2013 seventh-round draft pick to Arizona for a 2013 sixth-round draft pick and a conditional 2014 draft pick.

-San Francisco 49ers signed CB Nnamdi Asomugha to a one-year contract.

-Detroit Lions signed K David Akers and K Havard Rugland.

NASCAR Needs to Change How Inspections are Handled

This past week was a controversial week in NASCAR for one team. Penske Racing is coming under a lot of fire because both Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski's cars failed pre-race inspection. Logano had to start in the back because he was not out for the lineup in time due to having parts pulled from his car.

Once the race was over Joey Logano did not have much to say but the defending NASCAR champion had more then just words in his interview. ESPN had to edit much of the interview with the amount of expletives Keselowski was using. Penske has been under fire a lot this year but this is not the first time a race team has failed inspection. Hendrick Motorsports suffered consequences in 2011 when Jimmie Johnson's car failed inspection. The result was crew chief Chad Knaus being suspended and the 48 team being docked points which hurt them in the standings.

With some these recent problems maybe it's time for NASCAR to approach inspections differently. The first thing NASCAR should do is go to each teams facilities three times a year. They should do inspections three times a year. Inspections should be held a week before Daytona, during the middle of year and a week after the last race of the year. NASCAR should inspect all the shops including tools, and parts being used. If they find shops using illegal tools and parts then issue a warning that if they are not disposed of then they will sit out the first race of the year. That's one way of handling it.

The second way is after the final practice session is done allow all teams three hours to work on any changes to their car. Once those three hours up NASCAR officials should go inspect each car and then shut down the garage for the night. If a team has an issue with the car like an engine, transmission or radiator then they should be given extra time with a NASCAR official observing the changes. This way of doing things would make it a fair and equal playing ground for everyone.

NASCAR has been under fire a lot already in 2013 and if the drivers get angry at how officials handle things it will only bring negative publicity to the sport. The viewers shouldn't just be looking at Penske Racing. All the race teams try to get some sort of an advantage. It's just a matter of who gets caught and who doesn't. Keep checking back on anymore developments regarding inspections. It's controversial and you know Hollywood's World of Sports. We love controversy.

What the WWE Title Could Have Looked Like

During the Road to Wrestlemania WWE Champion, The Rock debuted a new WWE Championship belt that replaced the John Cena's Spinner Belt that had been around for eight years. A lot of people wanted to see spinner belt go away and it did. The new WWE belt has a unique feature. The side plates can change. The Rock had his Brahma Bulls, and John Cena has his logos. The belt does not have a nameplate but whoever has the belt will make it their own with their logos on the side. Recently, WWE.com released photos of other designs that had been thought up for the WWE Championship. With the releasing of the photo's there is much debate on what the WWE championship should look like.

This championship clearly represents the Raw Brand and has the modern day look for the WWE Undisputed  title.

This championship also had red in it that would represent the Ran Brand as well. It has a bulky centerpiece much like your spinner belt and the Attitude Era title as well. 

This Championship clearly reminds me of the spinner belt and the current WWE championship belt. It has all the glitz and bulkiness to it. The WWE logo really stands out.

I call this title the modern day winged eagle. This  belt has so much class and prestige much like the one in the late 80's and early 90's did. A lot of people are raving about the title and and it is only that people would like to see someday.

For now we are stuck with the WWE title that The Rock debuted and John Cena currently holds. Never say never to a new title belt. Sometimes it just takes time. Let the debate rage on!

Dolph Ziggler wins the WWE World Heavyweight Championship

The night after Wrestlemania is usually pretty wild and epic. Tonight Wade Barrett regained the Intercontinental championship, the crowd was on fire and the Brothers of Destruction reunited.  Dolph Ziggler started in WWE 7 long years ago under his real name Nick Nemeth as a caddy for Chavo Guerrero's gimmick Kerwin White. After the gimmick dropped he became a member of the Spirit Squad and was just known as Nicky. After the Spirit Squad ran its course Nemeth had his look and character repackaged.

In 2007, enter Dolph Ziggler. In his WWE career he has held the Intercontinental Championship, United States Championship, Tag Team Championship and last year captured the Money in the Bank briefcase which led him to tonight. Dolph has been very outspoken about how he feels it's time. Tonight it was his time and he took advantage of an injured Alberto Del Rio.

Dolph Ziggler's World Title win was gratification for me because he reminds me so much of Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig. Hennig never held the WWE Championship because of the Hulk Hogan era. Dolph has stolen the show on so many occasions, and at times wrestled two matches on pay-per-views. Ziggler is the future of WWE and it's about time he got the spotlight put on him. I see a lot of great things happening with Ziggler as champion. I really hope WWE does this right and gives him a lengthy title reign.

With Ziggler as champion now I really want to see a feud between him and The Miz over the title. I've been saying this ever since their match on WWE Main Event in November of last year. The top 5 people I would love to see Ziggler face besides The Miz are Chris Jericho, Christian, Alberto Del Rio, Kofi Kingston and if he comes back....Rob Van Dam. Only time will tell to see how Dolph Ziggler's first legitimate World Title reign goes.

Results and Review of WWE Wrestlemania 29

Tonight was the Super Bowl of pro wrestling, a pro wrestling holiday, and the showcase of the immortals. Wrestlemania 29 kicked off with an hour long preshow. The pre-show featured the Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett defending the title against The Miz. This was a great match that should have been on the main card. These two are definitely main event caliber performers who should be in the World Title picture. The Miz won the title to end the pre-show headed into Wrestlemania.

The first match of the night was The Shield taking on the team of Sheamus, Randy Orton and Big Show. The opening match was fast pace. The Shield paid their dues in this match. Towards the end of the match Sheamus and Orton refused to tag in Big Show which ended up costing them. After The Shield left Big Show knocked out both Orton and Sheamus and walked to the back.

A lot of people didn't have high hopes for Ryback and Mark Henry. It wasn't a bad match but it wasn't an epic match either. It is very hard to have a great match with two big men that are powerhouses. It was better than Goldberg vs. Lesnar but not better than Warrior vs. Hogan. Mark Henry won the match but Ryback gave Henry the Shell Shock.

The first title match of the evening was Team Hell No defending their titles against Dolph Ziggler and Big E. Langston. Langston had a great debut and showed what a true powerhouse should be. Ziggler and Bryan are two of the best in ring performers that WWE has and they had good sequences every time they were in the ring together. Kane and Langston also had good sequences. In the end, Daniel Bryan paid homage to Chris Benoit and Dynamite Kid by doing a diving headbutt to win the match.

I am going to blunt about this next match. Fandango who use to wrestle as Johnny Curtis had no business being on Wrestlemania. This was by far was one of the worst Wrestlemania matches that I've ever seen in my life. When I think of Y2J I think of his Wrestlemania matches with CM Punk, Triple H and Shawn Michaels. I will be erasing this one from memory bank and if Jericho was smart he would too. How the hell do you put Fandango over after a match like that?

After that disaster of a match we were treated to a great story and a great technical wrestling match. Del Rio and Swagger really the upper card going. I thought these two did a great job telling their story and getting both Zeb and Ricardo involved. There were a lot of counters but in the end Del Rio made Swagger tap to the cross arm-breaker.

The match of the night was CM Punk vs. The Undertaker. There was so much symbolism in this match. The fact that Punk was wearing Undertakers colors of grey, purple and black. Also watching Paul Heyman clutch the urn and talk to the urn was a little creepy. This match was such a great body of work. Undertaker proved he can still go and Punk looked very strong in this match. In the end, despite CM Punk's awesome performance The Undertaker came out with a victory and extended his streak to 21-0. If this was Undertakers last match then he went out on a high note. CM Punk is still the performer on the roster and this match proved why.

Triple H and Brock Lesnar took it to another level tonight then they did at Summerslam. Having Shawn Michaels involved in the match really added to the drama of it. A lot of people haven't liked the last few matches Triple H has had because they have been slow paced. Triple H knows how to tell a story. He is very slow and methodical in his style. Triple H brought his best to the table as did Lesnar but the final result ended with Triple H giving the pedigree to Brock Lesnar on the steel steps.

The Main Event was redemption vs. greatness and each man got what they wanted out of it. This match was a lot better then their first encounter at Wrestlemania. The Rock walked into the match as WWE Champion and John Cena the determined challenger. I honestly am not a huge fan of either person but it made more business sense for John Cena to regain the WWE Championship at Wrestlemania 29. I love the ending and the show of respect both men had for each other. The final image going off the air was Cena at the end of the ramp holding the prestigious WWE Championship in the air.

I would give Wrestlemania 29 7.5 of out 10. The under-card was not as good as it could have been. Fandango vs. Chris Jericho made the whole under-card look terrible. I was also unhappy that WWE wasted about 20 minutes worth of video packages and a performance by Diddy. In those 20 minutes you could have had the 8 person mixed tag that got nixed and a spot for the United States Champion Antonio Cesaro.

The main card was excellent and fun to watch. It's great to see the art of a classic pro wrestling match coming back to the forefront. At Wrestlemania 29 everything was left in the ring. Legends were made, careers were immortalized and heroes came home. The Rock fulfilled his greatness and passed the torch to John Cena which allowed for Cena's redemption.

Wrestlemania 29 came home and gave home a pretty decent show. Next year Wrestlemania 30 will be held on April 6, 2014 at the Superdome in New Orleans. It will be 30 years in the making. Until then, enjoy what you saw this year because Wrestlemania 29 had a lot of memorable moments.

Should the Sports Media Be More Sensitive?

On Sunday, Kevin Ware of the Louisville Cardinals Mens Basketball team suffered a compound fracture in his knee. Hours after this injury many sports media outlets and social media sites began playing the clip over and over. There has been arguments about this throughout the last few days.

One side says when an athlete signs on to play a sport whether it be college or profession, paid or non-paid they are giving up the right to privacy. When an athlete signs a contract to play a sport when a school signs a contract to have their games broadcasted they are signing a waiver to use any footage during a game. Athletes are celebrities and always in the public eye so people who watch them want to know everything that goes on with them. This is one side of a very sensitive topic.

The other side of this is people are saying that the media shouldn't being showing the pain and misfortune of someone else just to gain ratings. If Kevin Ware's injury ends his college career and any potential NBA career he could have had, is it right to keep replaying the injury and reminding him of what he lost? Lets use some examples of the past.

In the 2001 Daytona 500, Dale Earnhardt Sr. died on the last lap of the race. Is it fair to Dale Earnhardt Jr. to have to keep watching the clip of his dads crash over and over again. I see videos on YouTube all the time of soccer players collapsing and dying on the field. Should that type of video be open for the public? I give ESPN credit. They have not shown clips of the injury to Kevin Ware, just like they never showed videos of other athletes being seriously injured or dying while playing their sport. Yesterday, images surfaced of Kevin Ware's injury that were taken up close before the training staff covered it with a towel. I kept asking myself, whats the point of this? I believe in creating controversy because of my opinions on sports but I would never create it at the misfortune of someones injury.

Many are saying Kevin Ware is in the public eye because it is the March Madness tournament so it's okay to use. WWE Superstar Owen Hart was in the public eye when he fell to his death at a pay-per-view in 1999 so should WWE replay the footage of him falling to his death? Doesn't sound right does it? Late last year Jerry Lawler suffered a heart attack on a live edition of Monday Night Raw. The night Jerry Lawler returned from his heart attack they showed exclusive footage of him being put on oxygen and the medical staff trying to bring him back to life. If Lawler would have died, would they have shown the footage? CM Punk who has been WWE's top bad guy has been at the center of some pretty controversial segments which have included mocking Lawlers heart attack and playing into Paul Bearers death. Is their certain line that needs to be drawn in the WWE and sports media? Is their some things that shouldn't be shown or exposed?

 A lot of people say that being a celebrity forces them to give up their right to privacy but last I checked celebrities are human beings and their misfortunes shouldn't be exploited for increased ratings, readership or viewership. I understand that the media like myself has a job to do but there are more appropriate ways of covering a story.

Finally in all sincerity I do hope Kevin Ware does have a successful recovery and comes back to have a wonderful college career and hopefully an NBA career. The media should be more sensitive and sympathetic to those like Kevin Ware who are in pain and unsure of their future. He is a human being just myself and anyone else reads this article.
